k-mart at 6:15 am

by

The alarm went off at 6:00. “Why in the hell am I doing this?”

The answer was fast asleep in his room. So I get up, throw on some clothes, grab a mountain dew and Reese’s bar, and off I go.

As I drive, I’m thinking…”I bet their won’t be tons of people there. It opens at 7:00. I’m going to feel silly. I mean this K-mart hardly ever has a crowed”…oh how naive.

As I pull up I see about 50 people in line. Holy crap. When I was at K-mart about 2 weeks ago they said they had 10 Wii and were releasing them today. I almost went home.

But I was there and thought it would be a good study in humanity. So I stood…for 45 minutes…in the cold. The lady in front of me was there to get a GPS device. I though maybe I had a chance. Not everyone here was wanting a Wii…right?

The guy behind me had breakfast with him…smart. He would not share.

I got to hear the baby boom generation talk of a happier time, before long lines and text messaging.

Every time anything happened in the front of the line, the GPS lady would almost come unglued. “Their opening the door!”, but alas, no, it was just 6:45.

By now at least a hundred people where in line behind me. “This is the most folks k-mart’s seen in years” breakfast man said.

Finally, the doors did open, to yells of, “Get in line!” from the back. It seems people who arrived at 6:59 thought they could walk right in. But nay said the masses.

I find my way to the electronics, amid buggies and elbows. I saw GPS woman in a tug-of-war over her prize with another line stander. I missed who won.

My attention was wrenched away when I heard the question, so eloquently out, “you gots any mo Wiis?”

Sadly, the answer was “no”. I had missed out.

“This is bullshit! I wanna manager” Said a few. I knew it was no good. We had asked these fine K-mart people to get up early on Thanksgiving and come to work, I doubt any sympathy was going to come our way.

So the search continues.

Good luck on the Wii hunt, we have been looking for weeks. Michael’s mom was at the new target in Decatur last week and they happened to have 10 left. All the gamestop’s in town said they would have them tomorrow and they typically get more in on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If I see any I’ll give ya’ll a call!
