Football

by

peewee.bmpYes, my 50.2 pound, 7 year old son is playing football this year. He’s played basketball, baseball, soccer, and now football. He’s not the top athlete of his generation, but he enjoys sports. It also gives us a chance to spend more time together at practices and games. I usually help with coaching in some aspect, but football may be different.

I played 65 lb. ball growing up. My team sucked. We lost every game, and only made 2 touch downs the entire season. It was usually 42 to 0. I had a blast.

I played for one season, then my tonsils and a broken jaw in a car accident took me off the field.

The thing I remember the most was the time I spent with my dad. We didn’t so alot in the one on one level, except football. He played in high school, so we connected on this level. I loved it. Him helping me practice. He would make up plays for me to run, and he would be the quarterback. It was a time that I will always remember with a grin. I went into theatre, which is well out of my father’s realm of comfort, but still talk about that sucky season of football.

My son and I did that today. We walked over to the park around the corner. I made up a few plays.

“Run out 5 steps and turn left. We’ll call it ‘5-left’” and so on.

Then he started playing quarterback and made up some plays as well. “Run out 5 steps, turn left, run some, turn around and run back. We’ll call it 5-left-curl… on 2.”

We also were visited by a kitten who wanted to play defense.

It was a great morning. I hope he remembers this the way I remember my winning season with my dad.
